Current State of Affairs
I will try my best to get into a habit of writing a new blog entry every couple of days regardless of my current workload or state of apathy. The issue as of late has not been that i have been to busy…actually it has been the exact opposite. I have had tons of time to do everything I need to do, but as we all know, the more time we have the less we get accomplished.
There are two reasons for this. The first is that two weeks ago I began working twice the number of hours I have worked since I started this company. My wife and I used to own our own bookstore/coffeehouse and I had been splitting my hours between the two businesses. Unfortunately, we made the difficult decision to shut the doors for good about two weeks ago. So now all of my time and energy is being focused on one business, not two.
The second reason is an odd one. For the past three months I have had a steady influx of orders which have kept me extremely busy. The last job I built and installed was a rush job, which meant I had absolutely no time to think about anything other than completing that job!
Well, combine those two things and what you get is no jobs coming down the pipeline, because selling was ignored for work-in-progress, and a glut of time, thanks to my schedule increasing to full-time.
These things aren’t bad, but I need to make sure I capitalize on them. Working more hours per day (7-9 hours rather than 4 hours) will allow me to take on more projects at one time, or guarantee a shorter turnaround time for a single job. But, it also presents the dilemma of needing to sell more jobs in order to pay myself more salary, and keep myself busy.
Next blog entry I will discuss what my selling strategies have been over the past five months and how I am going forward from here.
