Sleigh Bed: Staining and Finishing Once the glue on the headboard and footboard had dried, we moved to the finishing room and applied a nice dark, rich red-brown stain.  After the stain, we sprayed on three coats of conversion varnish, ensuring years of scratch-free and worry-free use.
